In Case You Missed It: Manitoba Canola Growers Summer Field Tour & Blue Bombers Game

On July 24, Manitoba Canola Growers welcomed farmers to the Sir William Stephenson Agricultural Research Centre for an afternoon of learning and discussion. The tour provided attendees with an opportunity to connect with industry experts and gain practical knowledge to support on-farm decision making.

The tour began with a welcome and season update from Kurt Bisson, Manager of Agronomy with Paterson GlobalFoods. Presentations then focused on soil fertility, highlighting safe seed-placed fertilizer rates and canola fertility requirements. We then heard about best management practices with glufosinate, and the importance of preventing herbicide-resistant weeds in glufosinate systems. The tour concluded with a session on canola variety selection, featuring presentations from seed company representatives highlighting their leading varieties. The key takeaway was that no one variety is the best fit for every operation, making it important for farmers to choose varieties that align with their farm’s unique agronomic requirements.

Following the tour, farmers and their families headed to Princess Auto Stadium to cheer on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Hello Canola, Manitoba Canola Growers’ consumer outreach program, partners with the Winnipeg Football Club to connect fans with canola in a fun and familiar setting. Fans can spot the Hello Canola logo on fry boxes while enjoying fries cooked in canola oil. We look forward to offering farmers discounted tickets through the ticket portal again next season.
