New U.S. tariffs on certain Canadian products came into effect August 22. The measures impose additional tariffs on a defined list of Canadian goods.
Canadian canola seed, canola oil and canola meal are not subject to these new tariffs and continue to have tariff-free access to the U.S. market.
What does this mean for Manitoba canola farmers?
The movement of Canadian canola seed, oil and meal into the United States is not affected by the new U.S. tariffs.
The U.S. is an important market for Canadian canola and canola products, making continued tariff-free access significant for Canadian canola farmers.
What about Canada’s counter-tariffs?
The Government of Canada has announced counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion in U.S. goods, effective September 8. Tariffs of 15, 25 or 50 per cent will apply to selected products, including some agricultural equipment. The list includes some parts for harvesting, threshing and haying; cutting bars for hay and forages; and mowers. When making equipment or parts purchases, farmers may want to ask their dealer about potential tariff impacts.
