Manitoba Canola Growers (MCG) is the farmer-funded organization representing approximately 7,500 Manitoba canola farmers. Everything we do is focused on helping Manitoba farmers grow stronger crops, stronger markets, and a stronger future for canola.

Guided by a farmer-elected Board of Directors, we invest checkoff dollars where they create the greatest value for farmers today while building long-term success for the industry.

Helping farmers make better production decisions through practical research, agronomic expertise and knowledge transfer.

We invest in research that addresses farmer priorities, support applied on-farm learning, and work with partners to ensure new knowledge reaches farmers in ways they can use.

Through consumer outreach, market access, and canola utilization initiatives, we work alongside provincial and national partners to strengthen demand for Manitoba canola at home and around the world.

We work collaboratively with industry and government partners to bring forward farmer priorities, strengthen relationships, and help shape policies and initiatives that support a competitive and sustainable canola sector.

Farmer Funded. Farmer Directed

Manitoba Canola is funded through a producer checkoff collected on Manitoba-grown canola. This farmer-funded model ensures the organization’s priorities are shaped by Manitoba canola farmers and focused on strengthening the long-term success of the industry.

Today, the checkoff is $1.00 per tonne (2.2 cents per bushel). The rate is established under Manitoba’s Agriculture Organization Funding Act, which also governs how Manitoba Canola operates. Read more about the Act.

Checkoff Timeline

1982 – Manitoba Canola Growers Association was incorporated on July 8, 1982 and was initially funded through voluntary memberships.

1996 – A producer checkoff of $0.50 per tonne was introduced.

2008 – The checkoff increased to $1.00 per tonne.

Today – The checkoff remains $1.00 per tonne, helping fund research and agronomy, canola demand initiatives, and farmer-focused leadership on behalf of Manitoba canola farmers.

Canola Checkoff Facts:

The canola checkoff is on all Manitoba-grown canola, rapeseed and other oilseeds in the Brassica family.
The checkoff is collected by buyers, elevators, crushers and dealers and remitted to Manitoba Canola Growers to deliver programs and services on behalf of Manitoba canola farmers.
Every farmer who contributes checkoff is a member of Manitoba Canola Growers and has the right to vote in board elections, stand for election as a director, and bring forward resolutions for consideration by the membership.
Members also have access to benefits including member-only events, discounted event registration, free or discounted disease testing through Canola Diagnostics Services, scholarship opportunities and other member services.
Every checkoff dollar is invested to maximize value for Manitoba farmers. By working with provincial, national and international partners, Manitoba Canola leverages producer investments to achieve returns ranging from approximately 3:1 to more than 50:1, depending on the program.
